Pregnancy application provides a range of information and resources to support women’s pregnancy. These resources are categorized across domains of health care, social, and cultural practices.
Apps can be used to track the progress of a pregnancy, monitor signs and symptoms, and record medical appointments. They can also be used to share information about pregnancy with others.
It is important that pregnancy apps are reliable and have accurate content. In addition, pregnancy apps can be helpful tools to provide advice on diet and lifestyle during pregnancy and can help improve health outcomes for pregnant women.
During pregnancy, nutrition is critical for the short- and long-term health of the mother and her baby. However, there is a lack of research into the nutritional content of smartphone apps targeting pregnant women in the U.K. This review aims to evaluate the nutrition content and accuracy of apps available to U.K. pregnant women in iTunes and Google Play stores.
In order to determine the accuracy of nutrition information, keyword searches were conducted in iTunes and Google Play stores in November 2018. Candidate apps were deemed eligible if they targeted pregnant women, provided pregnancy-specific nutritional information, had a user rating of at least 4+ based on at least 20 ratings, and were available in English.
The inclusion of pregnancy apps is growing, with many women citing nutritional information as their main reason for using them. In addition to being informative and empowering, pregnancy apps may be useful tools to encourage behaviour change techniques (BCTs) for improving diet and nutrition during pregnancy.
